When to Visit

Best Time to Travel to South Africa

The best time to visit South Africa largely depends on what you want to experience. For incredible wildlife viewing, especially in the northern game reserves like Kruger National Park, the dry winter months from May to September offer ideal conditions to spot big game. If you're interested in birdwatching, the wetter months from November to February are the best time to travel to South Africa, with lush landscapes and temperatures ranging from 22°C to 33°C.

Because of its variety in regional climates, South Africa is truly a year-round destination. In the Cape region, Cape Town and the Winelands have hot and dry summers from November to February and mild temperatures of 23°C to 26°C, which is perfect for a beach visit or a visit to some wineries. If you want to go whale watching on the southern coast, a visit during July to November is best, as this is the peak time for whale sightings.
